Jeff creció como mochilero con su familia en el noroeste del Pacífico. No era ni mucho menos mochilero ultraligero, pero cargaba 50 libras cada uno y recorría 3 millas hasta un lago para pescar y acampar durante el fin de semana. A los 2 años, Jeff contrajo giardia en uno de esos viajes, y en otro tuvo tantas picaduras de mosquito que en la guardería pensaron que tenía varicela.

El excursionismo fue acompañado de la pesca, la construcción de balsas de troncos y la captura de cangrejos. Su primera travesía fue cuando Jeff tenía 20 años, en el PCT, y desde entonces ha batido 16 récords de velocidad y recorrido más de 50.000 km.
