Sawyer Training - La enfermedad de Lyme y cómo protegerse con equipos y repelentes de insectos seguros para la familia

As the geographic range of ticks expands, so does their overall population and prevalence of diseases– from the backwoods where we hike, hunt, fish, and camp to the backyard where our family and pets play. The CDC suggests that there are 10 times more cases of Lyme Disease than actually reported. The warmer, more humid seasons are creating conditions conducive to a surge in tick populations far greater than previously thought possible. Lyme Disease has also been reported in all 50 states in the U.S., including those that are deemed ‘low-incident states’. No matter how often you are outdoors, at some point you are more than likely going to be exposed to ticks even if you never leave your backyard.

More than just a nuisance or a nasty bite, ticks can carry several serious, life-altering and even fatal diseases. From Lyme Disease that can cause neurological disorders like Bell’s Palsy, flu-like symptoms, cognitive/psychiatric/muscoskeletal/respiratory symptoms, and more, to Rocky Mountain spotted fever and severe red meat allergies - ticks can transmit a range of vector borne diseases and one may not know until their life has already been flipped upside down. These diseases can hinder your ability to engage in daily activities such as work, socialize, and your hobbies. Preventing ticks from crawling on you or making it into your home in the first place is one of the most effective ways to avoid all the troublesome diseases they carry.

If you’re hiking in the great outdoors, the possibility of picking up a tick is high. Walking through thick brush, sitting in the grass during a quick break, or placing your backpack on the ground, even if only for a few minutes, are all ways to come face-to-face with an eight-legged hitchhiker. Also, if you are sitting on the grass at a concert or while star gazing, around a camp fire, walking the dog, or even mowing your own yard, it is incredibly important to protect yourself from these disease carrying insects. Nymph ticks are the highest cause of Lyme Disease cases in humans and also the most challenging ticks to see. They are most common as the season changes from Winter to Spring time when everyone is focused on the beautiful weather. Treating your clothes and gear with Sawyer Permethrin prior to your excursion is your first line of defense against tick and insect borne diseases.

Permethrin is a fabric insect repellent treatment with a chemical make-up similar to the organic compounds produced by Chrysanthemum-like flowers. Sawyer Permethrin can be applied to clothing, gear, and other fabrics.  It does not harm any fabrics or finishes and the treatment is 100% odorless after drying. Once the insect repellent has completely dried and bonded with the fabric fibers, it will last for 6 weeks or 6 washes.  The treatment does not deteriorate in the rain or in water, it is the heavy agitation of a washing machine or outdoor exposure that slowly breaks down the permethrin insect repellent.

Did you know that you have 74x more protection against ticks latching on to your shoes and crawling up your leg when treating your socks and shoes with Sawyer Permethrin?  (https://tickencounter.org/research/su...) In addition to clothing and accessories like shoes, boots, and waders, Sawyer Permethrin is ideal for treating backpacks, tents, camp furniture, hammocks, mosquito netting, luggage, and even bed sheets. You can even apply Sawyer Permethrin directly to dogs for protection from mosquitoes and fleas for 35 days and protection from ticks for 6 weeks.  Research shows there is a strong relationship between canine and human infection, and according to prevalence maps, there has been an 8% increase in canine Lyme Disease cases in January 2018 compared to January 2019. You can read the full application instructions for use on dogs at http://www.sawyer.com/dogs.

Children claim the highest incident rate of Lyme Disease in the United States. These pesky ticks may be found at summer camp, the bushes at their school playground, on stone walls, wooded picnic tables at the park, and even your own backyard. It is imperative to educate yourself and your children on the best practices to stay tick free. We all know the catchy tune, “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes”, but when checking for ticks, you want to be certain to check in all the “between areas” as well.  This includes your underarms, waist/back area, neck, belly button, and groin.

Avoid this trouble and do not fall a victim to Lyme Disease. Steer clear of the ‘Lyme Journey’ and pretreat your clothing and gear with Sawyer Permethrin.
