Clean water is essential to life, yet in many parts of the world, access remains a daily struggle. In remote areas where infrastructure is limited, the challenge of securing safe drinking water often defines both the rhythm of life and the boundaries of opportunity.
For hikers, clean water is more than a necessity—it's a lifeline.

And in places like Guatemala's highlands, where rugged trails weave through breathtaking yet isolated landscapes, the ability to source safe water is paramount.
This is where Quetzaltrekkers steps in, not just as a trekking organization, but as a bridge between adventure and awareness.
Known for their multi-day hikes through the Guatemalan highlands, Quetzaltrekkers offer more than just scenic trails—they provide an immersive experience that connects hikers with the region's history, culture, and environmental challenges.

Through treks like the Nebaj to Todos Santos route, they demonstrate how responsible tourism and innovative solutions like Sawyer water filters can transform the way we travel and the impact we leave behind.
Trekking Guatemala with Quetzaltrekkers
The Nebaj to Todos Santos trek is a journey unlike any other. Over the course of 4 days, hikers traverse a patchwork of lush valleys, dense forests, and remote villages in the heart of Guatemala’s highlands. The trail winds through the ancestral lands of the Ixil, Quiché, and Mam people, offering trekkers a glimpse into vibrant cultures that have thrived in these mountains for generations.

This unique hike is led by Quetzaltrekkers, a volunteer-run organization whose guides are just as passionate about sustainability and cultural exchange as they are about adventure.
Michelle, a Quetzaltrekkers guide, explained how she became involved: "I originally discovered Quetzaltrekkers when I was traveling through Guatemala in January 2024 and signed up for the Nebaj to Todos Santos hike. It was such a special experience for me, and I connected so well with my guides that it inspired me to come back in October 2024 and volunteer myself."

Conrad, another guide, shared a similar sentiment about his motivation: "Initially, I was inspired by the idea of getting to hike for a living in a beautiful part of the world. However, after spending some time here in Xela, it was the links with the various communities–both in Xela and on the hikes–that made me stay for as long as I have."
More Than a Just Trek
Guides from Quetzaltrekkers don’t just lead hikers through the highlands; they bring the region’s stories to life. Along the way, trekkers learn about Guatemala’s complex history, including the devastating armed conflict of the 1980s that deeply affected indigenous communities.
These lessons are intertwined with reflections on resilience, as guides highlight how these communities have rebuilt their lives while preserving their traditions.

"During this particular hike, we talk a lot about the history and culture of this area of Guatemala," said Conrad. "In particular, we focus on the effect of the armed conflict on the people and towns of this region. We feel that the hikers are always moved by hearing the personal stories of some of the owners of the homestays we stay with."

These moments of connection go beyond the trail, fostering a sense of respect and solidarity between travelers and the communities they visit. By sharing these stories, Quetzaltrekkers ensures that each trek leaves a lasting impact, not just on the hikers but on the legacy of the highlands themselves.
Clean Water and Conscious Travel
Trekkers journeying through the highlands gain more than just breathtaking views. They are introduced to sustainable farming practices, traditional weaving techniques, and the rhythms of daily life in Indigenous communities. Along the way, they also confront the region's environmental fragility, learning how limestone-rich terrain prevents well-digging and why rain tanks are vital for water collection.
Rainwater tanks are the primary water source for both locals and trekkers, but without filtration, the water is often unsafe to drink.
This is where Sawyer water filters play a vital role, ensuring trekkers and guides alike have access to clean water while reducing reliance on single-use plastics.

"On this particular hike, the water filters have been of great help in one location where we previously had to either boil water or use purification tablets for our clean water,” explains Michelle. “The filters have saved time and proved far more convenient."
The trek’s reliance on rain tanks highlights the importance of sustainable solutions.
On the second night of the hike, for instance, trekkers witness firsthand how a simple tap filter transforms rainwater into drinkable water: “We attach the tap filter to the outside tap–the water comes from a rain tank,” Michelle explains. “We also use the bag filters. Together, we can refill our clean water stores relatively quickly. Being lightweight makes them good for this long hike, as the guides are already carrying plenty of heavy gear."

While the filters provide immediate benefits to the hikers, they also serve as an educational tool.
Trekkers gain a deeper appreciation for the ingenuity required to thrive in remote areas, as well as the environmental and logistical challenges that come with maintaining access to clean water.
This educational experience is central to Quetzaltrekkers’ mission of ethical tourism. By weaving cultural insights with environmental awareness, the organization ensures hikers leave with a deeper understanding of the region’s complexities—and how their participation directly supports them.
Building a Sustainable Future for Adventure Tourism
Quetzaltrekkers is redefining responsible travel by integrating sustainable practices into their treks and using solutions like Sawyer filters to enhance safety and accessibility. Their efforts benefit both hikers and the long-term well-being of the communities they traverse.
For travelers, the Nebaj to Todos Santos trek offers more than stunning views of Guatemala’s highlands—it’s a chance to become part of a larger story of resilience, sustainability, and connection. The trek shows how adventure can inspire, educate, and empower, leaving a lasting impact on both hikers and the environment.

"We’d like to see more people experience the beauty and uniqueness of this region of Guatemala, as long as that continues to benefit the local communities and safeguard the environment," says Michelle.
As Quetzaltrekkers continues to grow, their vision remains steadfast: to immerse hikers in Guatemala’s landscapes, foster meaningful connections, and prove that even a simple walk in the mountains can be a powerful force for good.

Since 1995, Quetzaltrekkers has channeled 100% of its profits into Asociación Escuela de la Calle (EDELAC), a program that provides education, housing, and social support to disadvantaged children in Xela. For every trek completed, hikers contribute to a legacy of empowerment and community resilience. Consider hiking one of Quetzaltrekkers incredible hikes and make a difference.
