Let’s Get Ready – The Preparation Begins

Step 1: What Type Of Gear Do I Want?
I needed gear. Most of my gear was outdated and heavy. There are plenty of folks that hike with heavy packs and little preparation. My inner boy scout screams “Be Prepared!”. When a certain summer sale opened up, I dropped as much money as I could on new gear. I bought a shelter, bag, sleep system, cook system, and everything else I thought I would need. The result? I was not happy. My pack was heavy, the gear wasn’t great for what I wanted to do, and I simply didn’t enjoy backpacking.

That taught me one thing: I need to look at other’s, more. I started down the rabbit hole. Reddit, YouTube, Backpacker Radio, and other avenues guided me on the path I wanted. Soon after the hunt began, I found the world of ultralight. Now, I’m not an ultralight for the challenge of a sub 10 base weight. It makes my body work better in the sport. I have chronic pain from my time as an EMT. My pack weight, being 12 pounds, helps me enjoy backpacking.
