When Amy Stead trekked into the Washington mountains in the heat of July on a backpacking trip, she knew the bugs were going to be swarming. She was headed to an infamously buggy spot. But when she got there, she said the swarm of mosquitoes her group experienced was “a feeding frenzy,” the kind that keeps you trapped in your tent the whole trip.

Her friends had come prepared for the bugs, slathered up in essential oils in hopes of protecting themselves against the pesky insects. Stead, however, prepped her gear with Permethrin and sprayed herself with Picaridin insect repellent. It made all the difference. She said she walked away unscathed, while her friends were covered in nearly 200 bites.
